What is Mindfulness?

What is Mindfulness?

Happy Tuesday! Today we’re talking about living mindfully. Mindfulness techniques like meditation and deep breathing can help control stress, improve sleep, and even avoid illness. But hold that thought… even if you already practice things like meditation or yoga (and especially if you don’t) you might be thinking, what is mindfulness?

We found an awesome description at mindful.org:

“Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us.”

Basically, mindfulness suggests that your brain is fully present in what is going on in your life whether it be what you’re doing or where you physically are. It means keeping in touch with your body and not becoming overwhelmed by obsessive thoughts or anxieties. Certain techniques, like meditation and deep breathing, can help cultivate your mindfulness skills.

When we hone in on being present and take mindfulness practices to heart, that’s when we can see a change in our bodies and minds. Controlling stress and improving sleep quality is just the beginning.
