Eucalyptus Essential Oil

EUCALYPTUS ESSENTIAL OILIf there is anything clean, refreshing and energizing at the same time, it has to be Eucalyptus Essential Oil. I suggest everyone should have a bottle in their cabinet because it is so versatile and has SO MANY USES!

I have personally used it in many of my aromatherapy products such as the Winter BlendFiestaBUZZ-OFF Insect Repellent Aromatherapy SprayImmune Support Essential Oil and Body OilRESPIRO Andean Bath Soak. It’s probably easy for you to guess that I am really, really fond of Eucalyptus.

What is Eucalyptus?

Eucalyptus, which derives its name from two Greek words, “eu” (well) and “kalyptos” (covered), is one of the tallest trees growing up to a height of 100 meters. There are around 700 species of Eucalyptus but the most popular ones for oil yielding are E.globulus, E.radiata, and E.citriadora. The oil is extracted from the blue-green leaves of the tree through the process of steam distillation. Eucalyptus is native to Australia although it is now widely cultivated across Europe, Africa and South East Asia. Its multiple health benefits and ability to fight infections have also earned it the name of “Fever Tree”.

In Aromandina we use Eucalyptus radiata for its versatility and safety.

Eucalyptus Essential Oil: Uses in Aromatherapy

The health and medicinal benefits of the oil are widely known, it is being used in numerous natural remedies, conventional medicine, personal care and commercial products.

Eucalyptus oil is a powerful antiseptic, analgesic, antipyretic, antiviral, decongestant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic.  Its primary component, cineole, is used in rubs, pain balms and inhalers. Few people know this, but Eucalyptus essential oil works wonderfully as a safe and natural insect repellent – especially for babies and pets.

Eucalyptus Essential Oil for Respiratory Problems

As a decongestant and expectorant, Eucalyptus helps clear mucus from respiratory passages. It is the first oil of choice when you suffer from sinusitis, laryngitis, bronchitis or nasal congestion. Its antibacterial and antiviral properties may fight against infections and prevent them from spreading, thus supporting the immune system.
A few drops of Eucalyptus oil inhaled with steam or rubbed across the chest and back (diluted in carrier oil), can work wonders.
If you have a painful sore throat, gargle with 5 drops of eucalyptus oil diluted in 1 glass of warm water for instant relief.

Eucalyptus Essential Oil for Muscular and Rheumatic Pains

You will often find Eucalyptus as an active ingredient in many OTC pain ointments. This is because the oil’s anti-inflammatory, analgesic and warming qualities make it an effective remedy for muscular and joint pains. Combine 3 drops of Eucalyptus with 1 tablespoon carrier oil and massage over affected areas to get relief from aches, sprains, ligament injuries, muscular fatigue, rheumatic arthritis, fibrosis and nerve pains.

Eucalyptus Essential Oil for Skin and Personal Care

Eucalyptus essential oil can help combat acne and other skin infections. It is often used to treat burns, blisters, insect bites, wounds and cuts because of its germicidal action. You can add a few drops to your bath every day or even dilute it in water to make your own mouthwash because it helps fight plaque, cavities and gingivitis.

Eucalyptus Essential Oil for Domestic Use

Eucalyptus essential oil works fabulously as an all-natural floor/surface cleaner and air freshener. It deodorizes the house and kills disease-causing organisms.  To keep your house smelling fresh and squeaky-clean all the time just plug it into an electrical diffuser or add some to your cleaning water. You may even add a few drops to your laundry for heavenly smelling clothes.

Eucalyptus Essential Oil for Emotional Healing

The cool, refreshing scent of Eucalyptus has a positive and uplifting effect on the mood. On the other hand, its “cleansing” nature purges all negative emotions, particularly those that make us feel constricted or limited in our surroundings. It is recommended for those who haven’t let gone of grief because it helps release repressed feelings and encourages one to be more open and “move out” of a negative state.

Once you use Eucalyptus essential oil, you will fall in love with it – just like I did!
